Since ancient time to date, the woodworking techniques have been inevitably affected by the surrounding technical development of the time. Despite it, we can still find basic woodworking techniques meagerly survived and handed over for generations without changing its essence till today. One of such techniques is the production of hegi plate, or hand-riven wood splint, discussed in this paper. This basic woodworking technique is characterized by the processing naturally following the nature of wood. This simple but effective technique has a lot of rational aspects and is still much useful today to know the nature of wood. This paper is intended to discuss the hegi processing technique in detail from the view of the time background and the nature of materials and record the relationship between wood nature and woodworking then.
